Interactive Picture Book Cinema for Children

Project Partner

The Bürgerstiftung Berlin is a non-profit, non-partisan foundation established in 1999 by civil society under the patronage of Wolfgang Thierse. It is active in the Berlin metropolitan area and develops sustainable, inclusive, diversity-conscious educational projects for children, young people, families, and seniors in daycare centers, schools, family centers, and retirement homes. It also acts as an unbureaucratic, idea-generating platform for donors who want to invest their private assets in their own foundation or endowment fund.

Project Informations

The Berlin Community Foundation stands for: IN BERLIN – FOR BERLIN. It offers numerous projects for all city residents to actively participate in social life in the city.

The Interactive Picture Book Cinema is an innovative language and educational program for children. Picture book pages are projected in large format so that children can narrate the story themselves – regardless of their individual language skills. Specially trained moderators encourage children to express themselves linguistically, learn new words, and experience stories together. The aim is to awaken a love of language and books, expand vocabulary in a playful way, and enable participation for all children – including those with special needs or hearing impairments.

The interactive picture book cinema conveys language in a lively and inclusive way. With the consent of the publishers, we deliberately show the books with (almost) no text. This allows groups with very different language skills to participate together without any child feeling excluded. The method opens up a wide range of learning opportunities: from initial vocabulary exercises for language beginners to creative and philosophical discussions with older children. Pictures encourage speaking, boost self-confidence, and promote the joy of storytelling.

How would the Diyi for Kids Foundation like to support?

The interactive picture book cinema builds on children’s strengths. It promotes imagination, expressiveness, and cooperative learning in groups. For many daycare centers and schools in Berlin, regular picture book cinema presentations have become a fixed and popular part of everyday life.

Volunteers receive regular free introductions and training in the methodology of interactive picture book cinema. In this way, we enable committed people to effectively support children in their language development and strengthen educational opportunities at an early age.

Donations from the Diyi for Kids Foundation:

  • enable 15 kindergartens and schools to be supported with this language support method
  • 25 volunteers to be trained and supervised
  • in addition, everyone receives a starter set of books.

We at Diyi for Kids will also closely support this project with our time and interest, participating in live sessions and raising awareness of the project through our communication measures.
