Tomatenparade – Sustainable Gardening
Project Partner
The Bürgerstiftung Berlin is a non-profit, non-partisan foundation established in 1999 by civil society under the patronage of Wolfgang Thierse. It is active in the Berlin metropolitan area and develops sustainable, inclusive, diversity-conscious educational projects for children, young people, families, and seniors in daycare centers, schools, family centers, and retirement homes. It also acts as an unbureaucratic, idea-generating platform for donors who want to invest their private assets in their own foundation or endowment fund.
Project Informations
The Berlin Community Foundation stands for: IN BERLIN – FOR BERLIN. It offers numerous projects for all city residents to actively participate in shaping social city life. The Tomatenparade project teaches knowledge and enthusiasm for sustainable gardening and ecological diversity in schools, daycare centers, and other educational institutions. Tomatenparade is an educational approach to get children and young people
-
excited about ecological relationships and sustainable gardening
-
sensitize them to the value of food and respectful handling of food
-
strengthen their awareness of ecological responsibility.
The inventor of Tomatenparade was Hartmut Buchwald (1943-2025). In his garden, he grew over 110 different tomato varieties, whose seeds and seedlings are distributed to schools and daycare centers. Hartmut’s passion was to promote an ecologically valuable value chain, sustainable gardening, and—above all, but not exclusively—healthy nutrition for children.
How would the Diyi for Kids Foundation like to support?
We find Hartmut’s commitment to educating and teaching sustainable values for our planet and future generations admirable and would like to support it with our donations.
With financial assistance, this will be possible:
-
up to 500 seed packets and over 1,000 tomato plants can be grown and delivered to partner institutions each year
-
accompanying materials, such as the well-known tomato research book for children, can be printed
-
the video series can be continued to teach about the importance of variety and, of course, practical knowledge about tomatoes
Insgesamt profitieren über 100 Einrichtungen, von Kindertagesstätten bis Oberschule und unzählige Kinder und Jugendliche von 2 bis 18 Jahren, von den Aktivitäten der Berliner Tomatenparade.
In total, over 100 institutions, from daycare centers to high schools, and countless children and young people aged 2 to 18 benefit from the activities of the Berlin Tomato Parade.
Those who know us at Diyi for Kids know that we don’t just provide financial support. We also contribute our time, for example, in preparing the delivery of the tomatoes, with creative ideas for imparting knowledge, and in promoting the project on social media.
