A special moment for our shared commitment to sustainable education and healthy food took place during the recent gathering of the Tomato Parade in Berlin. On this occasion, the sponsorship for the tomato seeds was officially passed on to Acker e.V., continuing the work and dedication of Hartmut Buchwald, the initiator of the Tomato Parade.
The Tomato Parade is a project by the Bürgerstiftung Berlin. Each year, the initiative provides schools, kindergartens, and social institutions across Berlin with seeds and young plants from more than 100 different tomato varieties. Through this hands-on experience, children follow the entire journey of a plant—from seed to ripe fruit—learning how food grows and why biodiversity in nature matters.
Learning Through Growing
By taking over the seed sponsorship, Acker e.V. sends a strong message for education, sustainability, and appreciation of food. The nonprofit organization has long been committed to helping children and young people experience nature, vegetable cultivation, and healthy nutrition in a practical and engaging way.
For us at the Diyi for Kids Foundation, this collaboration is a wonderful example of how impactful projects can grow when committed organizations and individuals come together.
A Sunny Gathering — with Tomato Soup
The gathering itself took place on a beautiful sunny day. Together with representatives of the Bürgerstiftung, the Buchwald family, and the team from Acker e.V., many supporters and partners came together to celebrate this important moment.
And of course, the menu matched the occasion perfectly: tomato soup was served during the cheerful get-together.
Representatives from several schools also attended and many took the opportunity to adopt a tomato sponsorship themselves.
One Very Special Tomato
And which tomato did I choose to sponsor?
Of course number 31 — the Sugar Tomato.
Now all that is needed are a few more warm rays of sunshine so the seeds can soon be planted and new tomato plants can begin to grow.
Preserving Diversity, Planting the Future
The handover of the tomato seeds symbolizes what the Tomato Parade is all about:
preserving diversity, sharing knowledge, and planting the future together.
Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved who helps ensure that Hartmut’s deep knowledge and passion for tomatoes continues to inspire future generations.
