Protection and Career Prospects for Young Women in Nepal
Project Partner
Plan International is an independent development cooperation and humanitarian aid organization. Girls and boys around the world should have equal rights and opportunities and be able to actively shape their future. To achieve this, we implement efficient and transparent projects for sustainable community development in our partner countries and respond quickly to emergencies and disasters that threaten children’s lives.
In more than 45 countries, we work hand in hand with children, young people, supporters, and partners of all genders to achieve our global goal: 100 million girls should learn, lead, decide, and reach their full potential. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals reinforce our commitment.
Project Information
Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia with a population of over 29 million, where women make up nearly half of the population. Many women, particularly in rural areas, face barriers such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Supporting women in Nepal is key to strengthening families, improving community well-being, and driving sustainable development.
Women and young people are particularly affected by unemployment. Cultural role models and the few opportunities to obtain an educational qualification are among the reasons for this. Early marriage (more than a third of under 18-year-olds) or the early assumption of domestic duties also worsen women’s opportunities.
To give young people, especially young women, new prospects for the future, we will support them with vocational training and entrepreneurial courses. At the same time, educational and awareness-raising events are held for employers, government representatives and leaders from politics, religion and society.
How does the Diyi for Kids Foundation would like to support?
Every child has the right to protection, education, and a future lived in dignity. In Nepal, these rights are still out of reach for many girls and young women due to poverty, limited opportunities, and deeply rooted traditional norms. Our work begins where rights are at risk and hope is needed most.
We empower children, adolescents, and especially girls and young women to recognize their potential and shape their own lives. Through education, vocational training, mentoring, and coaching, we create pathways to economic independence and long-term security. By connecting young people with the labor market, we help them claim their right to work, participation, and self-determination.
At the same time, we actively work to prevent child, early, and forced marriages. Young people are trained as peer educators and change-makers, leading awareness campaigns within their communities. These youth-led initiatives give children and girls a voice and help make children’s rights visible and respected.
Lasting change is only possible with the support of families and communities. That is why we collaborate closely with parents, employers, local authorities, and community leaders. Through dialogue, public events, and awareness-raising activities, we promote gender equality, prevent violence, and challenge harmful traditional practices. Together, we strive to create an environment where children are protected, and girls and women can know, claim, and live their rights.
